SUMMARY:Re-Weirding the West: Acid Quakers\, Angel-Headed Hipsters\, and Psychedelic Religion in 2026
DESCRIPTION:Kaarten\n\n\n\n\n\nAt the vibrant cultural heart of Ruigoord\, the Psychedelic Salon returns for an evening exploring emerging questions in contemporary psychedelic culture. On Saturday June 27th we ask: What might a mature psychedelic spirituality in the West look like? \nAs psychedelics continue their migration into clinics\, universities\, startups\, and popular culture\, many deeper questions remain unresolved. Beyond therapy and medicalization\, beyond (de)criminalization\, and beyond inherited religious forms we see rituals\, ethics\, communities\, and cosmologies are beginning to emerge around psychedelic experiences. What does it mean to cultivate psychedelic practice within Western cultural and spiritual lineages\, without collapsing into cultural appropriation\, extraction\, or shallow mysticism? \nThis edition of the Psychedelic Salon brings together scholars and cultural historians J. Christian Greer (Stanford University) and Paul Gillis-Smith (Harvard Divinity School) in conversation with psychedelic and buddhist chaplain Daan Keiman on psychedelic religion\, Indigeneity\, ethics\, and the future of meaning-making in psychedelic culture. \nThe evening takes inspiration from Lisa Bieberman’s little-known 1968 pamphlet Phanerothyme: A Western Approach to the Religious Use of Psychochemicals\, a curious and visionary attempt to “home grow” psychedelic spirituality through the unlikely conjunction of Quaker silence\, Native American Church influences\, and Christian mysticism. From there\, the conversation promises to spiral into questions surrounding the global North’s psychedelic culture\, cultural appropriation\, the tension between emerging communities and religious institutionalization\, spiritual authority\, and what our guests mean when they talk about ‘the Weird’. \nIn the familiar style of the Psychedelic Salon\, expect an atmosphere somewhere between the seminar room\, an underground church\, and a countercultural gathering; rigorous yet exploratory and speculative\, historically grounded yet future-facing\, strange yet sincere. Our two invited speakers will both offer some of their visions for the future before they engage in a lively conversation with our moderator and the audience.
